We are different from all other clinics in the whole world for the following four reasons.
Dr. Weiwei Guan has been trained with the knowledge and experience obtained from treating hundreds of thousands of patients by five generations of Drs. Guan in more than 130 years. Her great-great-grandfather started practicing acupuncture in the 1880s. Since then every generation of the Drs. Guan contributed to the family legacy. Her grandfather was the co-founder of China’s first national acupuncture association and the editor of China’s first journal of Integrative Medicine. Her father is one of China’s most famous specialists in alternative medicine. People around the world have gone to China to study under him. Guan Special Acupuncture is officially ranked among China’s Top 7 acupuncture academic schools. Their techniques are included in many textbooks. Click here to see the Legacy of Guan Family.
Dr. Weiwei Guan has worked at Shands Hospital for years after graduating from UF with her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. She “speaks the same language” as other health professionals so there is little chance of miscommunication. Patients and their healthcare provided can easily communicate with Dr. Guan as they would with any other providers in the Western medicine system, and not have to worry about culture barriers.
Very few other specialists, if any, has had the intensive anatomy training that our acupuncturist, Dr. Weiwei Guan, obtained through her education in the Western medicine system. She went through a total of 36 months of anatomy training in college, graduate school and residency, working on real cadavers, as part of her Doctor of Physical Therapy training. No acupuncture school in the whole world offers this type of training. She knows where to insert the needles and, more importantly, where not to, ensuring the safety of her patients.
If it is suitable to your condition, you will get the benefits of combination treatment from a leading expert in providing integrated solution to musculoskeletal problems. While acupuncture is better at controlling inflammation and pain, stimulating the recovery of nerves, and treating non-musculoskeletal problems, physical therapy is better at improving strength, range of motion, endurance and coordination. After graduating with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Florida, Dr. Guan completed orthopedic physical therapy residency at UF Shands Orthopedic and Sport Medicine Institute, where she received intensive training in treating various muscoloskeletal conditions. She has helped many patients with physical therapy since 2011. Here is more about Physical Therapy in Gainesville.
More About Dr. Guan
Dr. Weiwei Guan is Gainesville’s leading physical therapist and acupuncturist who helps people to become more active, mobile and energetic, so they can work hard, take good care of their families and have fun with friends, without painkillers, injections, or surgery.
She founded Guan Physical Therapy and Acupuncture because she wanted to provide the best and safest non-surgical solutions to patients suffering from chronic pains and discomforts in Gainesville. These patients would benefit from the uniquely comprehensive approaches that are not provided by any other clinics in Gainesville. Having received the optimal combination of physical therapy, acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine, many of her patients comment that they are feeling better than they have been in years.
The other reason that Dr. Guan started her own clinic was to continue her family’s legacy. She is the fifth generation of a prominent family of physicians. The family‘s special acupuncture techniques are well-known in China and included in many acupuncture textbooks. Her grandfather was the co-founder of China’s National Acupuncture Association. Her father is one of China’s ten best acupuncturists, as ranked by China’s official national agency, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The three most recent generations of Doctors Guan have published more than 15 well-received acupuncture books. Her only sibling, the older brother, has become a successful general surgeon and seemingly has given up on the family tradition. It is up to Weiwei alone to keep the family legacy going and she is honored to take on the task.
She is a UF-educated/Shands-trained Doctor of Physical Therapy and has practiced in Gainesville since 2011. She is also the fifth-generation Chinese medicine physician of a family that is famous in China for their special acupuncture techniques.
With the combination of physical therapy and acupuncture, she has successfully treated many patients with musculoskeletal problems, such as back pain, neck/shoulder pain, knee pain, etc. The patients who have received the combination treatments tend to respond better than the ones who have had only one type of treatment.
Her other specialty is using acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine to treat Digestive System Problems, Stress Related Problems, Women’s Health Problems and Neurological Problems.
Dr. Guan graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of Florida in 2011. Then she completed the Orthopedic Rehab Residency at Shands Hospital where she was intensively trained by the best physical therapists. She continued working at Shands and another PT clinic for a few years, until she finally decided to start her own practice on the road less travelled to provide patients with the unique and comprehensive solutions.
Florida Licenses: Physical Therapist (No.26628), Acupuncturist (No 3943).
Education Background
Born and raised in China, Weiwei moved to Florida to attend college. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from University of South Florida in 2006, she moved to Gainesville in 2007 to attend the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at University of Florida. She fell in love with Gainesville and has called Gainesville home since. Though she had apprenticed under her father, to qualify for the acupuncturist license in the US, she attended and graduated from the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture with a Master of Acupuncture. She is nationally board certified as Diplomat of Oriental Medicine.
Unparalleled Knowledge
Her unique background has granted her an unparalleled knowledge base. It is unlikely any other acupuncturist could have had the intensive anatomy training that she’s had. She has progressively taken year-long anatomy lab training three times: in college, in graduate school, and during the residency. Through these training programs, she gained enormous knowledge on human bodies. She knows precisely where the needles should go, and more importantly, where the needles should not go.
A published Author
During the three-year apprenticeship under her father, she not only learned from the master himself like other apprentices of his but also had the opportunity to inherit the real jewels from his 50+ years’ clinical experience. Cooperating with her father and previous apprentices, Weiwei has published 5 acupuncture books, 3 of them by China’s top medical publisher, People’s Medical Publishing House. Click here to see the booklist. She also served as the reviewer for the first set of Clinical Guidelines that was published in China by the Orthopedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Neck and Shoulder Pain
”I’ve had a wonderful experience as a new patient of Dr. Guan’s. During my initial two sessions in her beautiful new facility, Dr. Guan has spent adequate time assessing and discussing my symptoms and developing a holistic treatment plan that combines her comprehensive expertise in the areas of physical therapy, acupuncture and herbal medicine. It’s impressive to get my first acupuncture treatments (which were not painful at all and very relaxing) from a 5th generation Chinese medicine expert – what a heritage!
Her practice is equipped with state of the art equipment that is used in her treatment approach, which has proven to be unique and highly effect. For my neck and upper back problems, the neck stretching machine is outstanding! Her treatments have made a huge difference! I highly recommend Dr. Guan!”
Gail Basker, Gainesville, FL
Low Back and Hip Pain
“I couldn’t step up on a sidewalk without pain in my right hip. i went to the Orthopedics and I was told I had sciatic and should wear a back belt and take Aleve twice a day. Wei Wei was recommended by some friends and she said you have one leg longer than the other. She did some physical therapy and acupuncture. after 2 sessions the sharp pain was gone. She is very good. “
Sheila Inniss, Gainesville, FL
Knee pain and gastrointestinal reflux
“I recently had a total knee replacement and suffered with gastrointestinal reflux for many years. Under her care with both needles and herbs, I am happy to report that my reflux has disappeared, and I no longer take the herbs. Also, the needles were instrumental in relieving pains associated with arthritis and post knee surgery.
Dr Guan is very amiable but professional. I felt very comfortable in her presence and looked forward to our sessions, anticipating relief from my pains. I will continue to seek her help and have recommended her to several friends who now share my high opinion of her. “
Michele Thomas, Gainesville, FL
Shoulder Pain
“I highly recommend Dr. Guan as a knowledgeable, skilled and caring doctor of Physical Therapy and Acupuncture. Her one on one, hands on approach to patient care has greatly aided in the process of healing my shoulder. Our community is fortunate to have her practicing here.”
Josephine Pelham, Treton, FL
Shoulder Pain
“Dr. Guan is such a caring person and has helped relieve my severe shoulder pain. I had never tried acupuncture, but before undergoing surgery, thought I would give it a chance. It is not painful and she explains what she is doing and how it is helping. Highly recommend!”
Stephen Anton, Gainesville, FL
Hip and Knee Pain
“I love the comprehensive approach that Dr. Guan takes to treating muscle and joint issues. I’ve never met someone who has her unique background with training and degrees in both acupuncture and physical therapy. Because of this, she is able to integrate acupuncture, as well as light and heat therapy, with more traditional physical therapy treatment approaches. Based on my experience during the past six weeks, this comprehensive treatment approach is truly effective and has helped me regain mobility in my knees and hips. As an added benefit, Dr. Guan has a great personality, which makes the whole experience fun as well.”
Raffelle St John, Palm Beach, FL
Constipation
“Hi Weiwei, I am Tia’s very happy mother! I appreciate what you have done for me! Over thirty years of constipation and after trying countless remedies from high fiber diet, magnesium, prunes, beets, Vit C powder, many practitioners with many herbs, fibers, probiotics, prebiotics , cleanses, colonics, chiropractors, all of no avail. The only thing left to try was the prescribed medication from my doctor. The possible side effects were not worth the risk so I was feeling discouraged. I was hesitant to try one more thing, but my daughter spoke so highly of you. With a cabinet full of expensive jars and bottles of products, I stepped out and ordered the herbs that you formulated just for me. This was my last ditch effort before having to live on prescription medication. It worked!!!!
I don’t know how to describe how wonderful it is to feel like a normal human being! My digestion has never been so good. I can eat things that I wouldn’t dare touch like cheese, bread, and I even tried a little meat and I cannot believe the transit time! 24 hours! Most days I am going 1-3 times in the morning for a complete evacuation. Wow! It’s been 21/2 weeks and I never felt better!
When I finish these herbs, please let me know what to order for maintenance. I’ve actually learned to enjoy having my ‘special tea’! “
